Hello TechNow Customers.  Thanks for your Business!
  • Think Secure.  Be Secure.
Network Security is more than simply a set of skills, technologies and/or equipment.  It is a mindset.  It is a guiding principle for the way you design, deploy and maintain your Network Infrastructure.  And the first thing a Corporation or Government entity must acquire, if it hopes to maintain a secure network, is a commitment to Think Secure and Be Secure.    more...
  • Three Things You Should Know About Active Directory
For many of our clients Active Directory has been a sort of "Phantom Menace" - seeming to lurk around every corner, but never showing its face.  This will soon be changing for many of our clients.  The decision to move to Active Directory was made long ago for most organizations and the planning process for many of them is largely complete.  This leaves only one thing: Implementation.  It is looking more and more like 2002 will be the year for Windows 2000 Active Directory.  Here are 3 things you should know:

    1.  If DNS Does Not Work Correctly, Active Directory Does Not Work Correctly.

Windows NT 4.0 NT Directory Services relied on WINS in a routed environment.  WINS tied the network together by maintaining a database of computer name to IP address mappings for every host in the network. This allowed any host to communicate with any other host via its NetBios Computer Name.  With Active Directory, all that has changed.  It relies on the DNS fully qualified domain name, such as Security.technow.com for its communications.  So if your host name is incorrect or DNS is down, Active Directory will have serious problems.

    2. You Need Active Directory before You Can Deploy Exchange 2000
Exchange 5.5 is still used in most organizations because most of them have yet to deploy Active Directory.  However, most of these same organizations are in the process of upgrading their Exchange 5.5 servers to the Windows 2000 Operating System.  They are not upgrading to Exchange 2000 because they must first upgrade to Active Directory.  This is because Exchange 2000 does not have its own directory service, like Exchange 5.5 did.  Instead, it relies on the Domain's Active Directory for user account information.  So when you consider the amount of time and planning that goes into a migration, Exchange 5.5 will probably be around for a good long while.

    3. Active Directory's Top-Down Command and Control Hierarchy
    is closer than you think...

Deployment is right around the corner and will get here faster than you think.  When it arrives System Administrators higher up the food chain will be able to set policies for lower level domains, override local domain policies and manage your entire network through Universal Groups.  Are you ready for that?  To get a heads up, check out this article or register for TechNow's Active Directory Course this December 3-7 in Austin, Texas.
