  • 3 Ways to Protect Your Windows NT/2000 Servers.
Network Security is more important than ever.  Recent events have shown that we are far more vulnerable to attack than we ever imagined.  Military experts have long warned of hostile governments and terrorists preparing to wage an information war against the US Economy to level the playing field in their favor.  Today, those experts believe that because so little attention is paid to Network Security that cyber-attacks are all but inevitable.

Windows NT/2000 has been shown to be particularly vulnerable to attacks with the advent of Nimba and Code Red.  The following are three things you can do immediately to secure your servers:

    1.  Install the Latest Security Patches from Microsoft.
New vulnerabilities are discovered every day.  Microsoft develops patches called "hot-fixes" to correct these vulnerabilities as they are discovered, but it's up to you to download them and make certain they are installed on your servers and workstations.  To keep up to date on new patches as they become available subscribe to Microsoft's "Product Security Notification" by clicking here.  Also, keep in mind that in the past these patches have caused problems.  Always backup your system before you patch it!

    2.  Turn off All Unnecessary Services on Your Servers.

Microsoft products are all about functionality.  MS Operating Systems and BackOffice products install with a myriad of services and capabilities that  are quite simply not required on most servers.  Figure out which Services you don't need and Disable them.  Pay close attention to the Server service.  If you don't need to transfer files using Microsoft's SMB protocol (usually done using Windows Explorer) then Disable it.  This step alone will close down countless back doors to your servers.  And as always, be sure to back up your server before you begin the process of locking down your systems.

    3.  Block All Unnecessary Ports with Windows NT/2000's built-in Firewall Capabilities.
A port is a doorway into your server.  The easy thing to do is just leave them open, which is how they are configured by default.  Don't do this!  Every server has a handful of specific functions which require a handful of specific ports to be open.  Figure out which ports are necessary for your server to function and close the rest.  A good example of this is port 25, which should be kept open for SMTP mailers.  To close ports using Microsoft's built in firewall, go to the Advanced TCP/IP properties of your server.  On the options tab go to the properties of TCP/IP filtering and configure your options.  You must be very cautious as you do this as shutting down the wrong ports could render your Network Services inoperable!  Only attempt this with a thorough understanding of TCP/IP and the services that are running on your server.
