Post Reports Number of Hacks Up Sharply
In the last 6
months of 2001 one firm alone reported over 128,000
verified attacks amongst its 300 clients and over 52,000
breaches, up 50% from 2000. 2001 also saw over
2,400 new vulnerabilities detected, which means more
hackers are spending more time probing systems and
finding new exploits. Other important findings for
2001 include an estimated 41% of companies suffering
from "critical attacks" and 12.7% encountering
at least one "emergency", which caused them to
initiate recovery procedures. 30% of attacks were
estimated to originate from within the United States,
while Israel was the country from which the highest
percentage of attacks originated per Internet
user.
The analysts' bottom line: The threat is much greater
than previously known.
