Hello TechNow Customers.  Thanks for your Business!
  • New York Times Website Hacked
Though not highly publicized at nytimes.com, the company's website was hacked through a poorly defended Proxy Server.  The "White Hat" researcher was able to access sensitive New York Times files including a database of Op-Ed contributors, which included their names, social security numbers and other personal data.  Notables in the database include James Baker, Jimmy Carter, Robert Redford and others.

  • SNMP More Vulnerable Than You Think
Researchers in Finland were 12 for 12 in their attempt to use SNMP, an industry standard for managing TCP/IP based devices, to bring down servers.  SNMP accepts two basic commands; get and set.  The get command is for retrieving system data such as "uptime" or "host name".  The set command allows users to set certain system variables such as "IP Address" or "Shutdown", depending on the implementation of the particular SNMP agent.  One of the real gotchas with SNMP is the fact that the only security involved is a "community string", which is used to authenticate anyone attempting to use the get or set commands.  The problem is that this community string is not encrypted and can be captured by anyone sniffing the network.
