Use
"Honey Pots" to
Catch Hackers
Security
researchers at Georgia Tech are using so-called "Honey
Pots", highly monitored unsecured servers, to detect
compromised systems. The idea is to leave certain
dummy servers with low security making them irresistible
targets for hackers or worms. When these systems are
attacked the heavy monitoring allows security analysts to
pinpoint where the attacks come from, which is usually
from a compromised computer on the local network.
This makes detecting compromised systems less of an art
and more of a science.

Justice Department Unsatisfied with Microsoft Licenses
The US Justice
Department "remains concerned" about Microsoft's licensing
practices and has asserted that Microsoft has still not
fully complied with its landmark anti-trust settlement
with the government. At issue is how much Microsoft
plans to charge to let competitors view the inner workings
of its source code. Microsoft has agreed to allow
this on "reasonable and non-discriminatory terms," but
competitors charge that the terms are anything but
reasonable. Given that this provision of the
settlement was considered a key victory by the Justice
department and was critical to restoring competition to
the software industry, the outcome of this dispute could
have huge repercussions.

Oracle Gets MORE
Aggressive
No one ever thought it was possible, but Oracle has actually
gotten more aggressive. From a profit standpoint, the
company recently reported fourth quarter net profits of $858
million compared to $655 million last fourth quarter, with
revenue totaling $2.83 billion in the 3 month period.
Oracle representatives explained their rising fortunes as
evidence that they are gaining ground against competitors
such as SAP and of course PeopleSoft. Oracle also
continues to make headlines with its hostile takeover bid of
PeopleSoft, which has triggered recriminations, law suits
and anti-trust questions. Will Oracle dominate the
smaller players in the database market?
