Spammers
must pay with new Microsoft invention
Tens of millions
of unwanted messages are sent to computer users each day,
creating an unwanted overflow of e-mails. A group of
Microsoft researchers think they have come up with a
solution to slow down the spammers. Using the idea
of the British postage system of the 1830s, they have
named their development the Penny Black project.
This poject would require the senders to "pay" for the
mail sent. "Payment" would not be in currency but in
time and memory. Each e-mail would require the
sender to work out cryptographic puzzles before it can be
sent, the sender would then be added to a "safe list."
Ted Wobber and the Microsoft Research group (MSR)
calculated that with 80,000 seconds in a day, and about 10
seconds for the spammer to solve the puzzle, only 8,000
messages would go out, at most.

"Homeless
Hacker" accepts plea bargain
The
so-called 'homeless hacker' says he will accept a plea
bargain after being accused of breaking into The New York
Times' computer network. Adrian Lamo is planning to appear
in court Thursday. Before surrendering to the FBI in
September, Lamo ran up the bill on a subscriber-only
news-archiving service. Lamo is now out on bail and
said in a telephone interview Monday that the plea bargain
could include six months of home detention. Lamo is
called the homeless hacker because he has stayed with
numerous friends across the country or in vacant buildings
when necessary and has no permanent address.

Linux
kernel upgraded to fix security flaws
The new version of the Linux kernel was released Monday
aimed to quickly fix several bugs. Two of the bugs are
serious security flaws. This upgrade comes only a
month after the release of the pervious version and is
intended to fix the flaws as soon as possible. The
most serious flaw resembles a flaw fixed in November, in
which attackers took control of several key Linux servers
used by open-source developers. Intruders are
allowed to increase privileges of a normal user account to
the same level as the system's owner in both flaws.
The second allows an intruder to read some memory used by
the kernel.
